Isn’t this cooler weather refreshing?! It’s hard to believe that October is almost over! And speaking of October...
HALLOWEEN: This is just a reminder that the Great Hearts school system does not celebrate Halloween. Please do not send treats to pass out on that day. BOOK FAIR: The school book fair is taking place today through Wednesday. On Monday they made a list of books that interested them the most. This list was in the students’ red homework folders. If you were unable to attend the parent shopping night on Monday night, you may send money to school. Students will be allowed to visit and purchase books from the fair on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you choose to send money to school with your child, please put it in a zip-lock baggie, write your child's name on the baggie, and tape it inside the red homework folders. Don’t forget to include money for the 8.8% tax. PICTURES: School pictures have arrived. If you ordered pictures, the picture envelope was in their backpacks on Monday. If you did not order pictures, an online code card has been placed inside your child's homework folder. ACADEMICS: Math - We are working on addition and subtraction of numbers to 20 this week. Thank you to everyone who came to conferences last week. We enjoyed conversing with you about your child’s progress.
MATH - During the 1st quarter most of the math concepts that are covered are review and building on concepts taught in Kindergarten. Starting in 2nd quarter, most of the concepts will be new. "Friendly Notes" pages are sent home periodically which contain information and language that you can use when helping your child with math. Knowledge of the basic math facts is essential because scholars can spend more time on the math concepts themselves rather than basic calculation. ACADEMICS - Spalding - Student will learn 10 new words on Monday, 10 new words on Tuesday, and 10 new words on Wednesday. We will review the 30 words on Thursday. The test is on Friday. Math - We started a new unit today - Numbers to 20. This unit contains a lot of information. Skills learned in this unit include: identifying a ten and some ones, ordering numbers, comparing numbers, methods of addition of subtraction, and story problems. The first set of "Friendly Notes" pages were sent home on Monday. The second set will go home later this week. Please keep this information at home and use it to help your child while working on math. EVALUATIONS: In the Great Hearts district, teachers are asked to write very extensive evaluations for each student for the first quarter. Please take the time to read those evaluations that will be attached to the report cards at the end of fall break. Some teachers are more eloquent with their words than others. Some write longer paragraphs, some write shorter. No matter the length or the eloquence of words, know that there are many, many, many hours of work and love that goes into each one of them.
