Oh my goodness! Lots of illnesses and colds! This is just a reminder that if your child has a fever or strep throat, please make sure to keep him/her home for the day. Also, make sure your child has a water bottle when coming to school. We take frequent in-class drink breaks and when scholars have colds it is important to have easy access to a water bottle. In class, we are encouraging the students to cough directly into their arm rather then on their classmates' and teachers' faces. If your child is going to be absent, please be sure to call the attendance line. If you want us to send homework up to the front office to be picked up, please let us know in the morning. That will give us time to get the stuff that we are able to send home together and ready.
Because of all of the colds, we are in need of tissues in our classroom! ACADEMICS: Spalding - We can’t stress enough the importance of daily practice of the PHONOGRAMS - doing 15-20 cards per day will get them all reviewed during the week. We recommend not only oral reviewing of the phonograms, but writing them down also (this is how they are tested weekly). Spelling - Students will learn 10 new words on Monday - Wednesday, review the 30 words on Thursday, and have the test on Friday. - Reminder- Spelling homework is not a copy work assignment. Directions: 1. Say the word. Use it in a sentence. Say the word again. 2. Have students write the word with markings. (If you notice them struggling, have them spell the word on their fingers first) 3. Repeat with the rest of the words. (If you notice your child misspelled a word, stop and help them with the correct spelling.) 4. Complete the list a second time in a different order. Math - Adding and subtraction numbers to 40 History - Early Explorers and Settlers Poetry - "My Shadow" by Robert Lewis Stevenson Students should have the first two stanzas memorized now. This week focus on the third stanza. UPCOMING DATES: Friday, February 7 - Half Day Dismissal at 12 PM * Trivium Spirit Day* / No lunch served on half days. XTRAMATH - SUBTRACTION All students were switched to beginning subtraction on Friday the 17th. This did not affect any scholar who was already on beginning subtraction or any scholar who had passed the beginning subtraction programs and were already working math facts through 20. All students need to be completing Xtramath at least three times each week. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will learn 11 new words on Tuesday and on Wednesday. The review is on Thursday and the 22-word test is on Friday. Math - Numbers through 40 - A "Friendly Notes" packet went home in the homework folders today. Please keep it at home and use it when helping your child with math homework. PROJECT NIGHT INFORMATION: 1. Project night is this Wednesday, January 15th. 2. Scholars will come down to their classrooms at 5:45 while parents wait in the courtyard. 3. Parents will be able to mingle through all of the classrooms after the scholars are set up and ready. This will take place at 6:00 4. PROJECT NIGHT IS AN OPEN HOUSE EVENT. After visiting our classroom please feel free to visit both the other first grade classrooms as well as all the classrooms of other grade levels. Due to the large number of people who will be walking through the classrooms parents will not be able to stay in their scholar's classroom. 5. Part of project night includes scholars being able to talk about their projects. When visiting other scholars, classrooms, grade levels, good questions to ask are, "What is your system? What did you study? What are the parts? What was the most interesting thing you learned?" 6. Parents may pick up their scholar at 6:45. Please contact any first grade teacher if you have any questions about Project Night. WORKBOOK 1A: We will be sending workbook 1A soon. Please do not set it back to school. This unit includes number patterns, number ordering, identifying tens and ones, comparing numbers, story problems, and adding and subtraction two digit numbers. All skills are building on the Numbers to 20 unit that students studied during 2nd quarter. Basic knowledge of the basic addition and subtraction math facts will help your scholar with this unit. Science - Science project presentations History - Early Explorers and Settlers Grammar - Review of nouns and pronouns - Students will begin learning about action verbs on Thursday. We wanted to tell everyone thank you for the wonderful gifts we received before break! We are in the process of writing thank-you notes to send home, but we have learned from experience that the thank-you notes don't always make it home, so thank-you for everything! We also wanted to thank those who participated in the Snow Storm. You were all very thoughtful and generous!
SECOND SEMESTER IN 1ST GRADE: Each quarter of the school year has its own special energy. We like the the 3rd quarter because the students are fully immersed in the first grade culture. They are confident and know exactly what to expect. There is a lot of fun, engaging conversation. The concepts taught do get more challenging in the third quarter. As one particularly articulate student from one of the past years put it, "Not everything is easy. Now I have to really think!" Please remember that if you ever have questions about how to help your child you do not have to wait for us to contact you first. You can send us an e-mail and request a meeting. PROJECT WEEK INFORMATION: Before break, every student received a basic project week letter with the body system that they had been assigned. Today students received a project week packet and a separate paper with information about their system. The students placed their packet and paper in their red folders so they could complete the first page of the packet. Parents may assist / monitor / oversee the work on that page. STUDENTS MUST BRING THE PAPER AND PACKET WITH THE ASSIGNED PAGE COMPLETED THE NEXT DAY as they will need it in class the following day. Project night is next week, Wednesday, January 15th. ACADEMICS: Spalding - Students will have a very short list each day in order to allow time to focus on project week. Students learned 5 new words today. They will learn 5 new words on Tuesday, 5 words on Wednesday, review on Thursday, and take the 15-words spelling test on Friday. Math - We are working on our Graph Unit this week. There will be no homework other than Xtramath this week. I do suggest you go over the "Friendly Notes" which will be sent home in the red folders tomorrow and the in-class review pages that will be sent home at the end of the week with your child. Science - We are focused on the writing part of the body system project. Each night's science homework will be used in class the next day. Please note that the 3-D model must be completed at home.
