PETER PIPER PIZZA
It was fun to see so many of you at this fundraiser last week! Thanks for coming out and supporting our academy. WATER BOTTLES Due to the heat, please make sure your child brings a water bottle to school every day. RED FOLDERS, AGENDAS, MATH WORKBOOKS This is just a reminder to send these back to school every day. BLUE FOLDERS These folders will be sent home on Mondays; they contain returned and graded work. Please review them with your child. Also, remember to sign your initials on the log stapled inside the folders. ACADEMICS: Spalding – Spelling words start this week. Students will learn 5 words on Tuesday, 5 words on Wednesday, and review on Thursday. The 10-word spelling test will be on Friday. Math – At this point in time all scholars should have started Xtramath and be completing Xtramath at least 3 times each week. The Xtramath homework is part of the overall math grade each quarter. Also, make sure your child completes each session; incomplete sessions do not count as a completed daily grade. In class, students are studying number bonds, which help students identify the parts and whole of addition and subtraction sentences. We will be sending home Chapter 2 “Friendly Notes” on Tuesday. These notes are an excellent resource when helping your child with math at home. They give the language and examples of things we are doing in class. In first grade every chapter builds on the previous. Please keep the “Friendy Notes” at home so you can easily access them. Geography – We completed a geography review in class and the test is on Tuesday. Science - We will start an introduction to Science on Thursday. Literature – “Different Lands, Similar Stories” – we will be identifying characters, setting, and plot in a story. Grammar – We will be discussing common and proper nouns. Poetry – “I’m Glad” - Work on memorizing this poem at home. UPCOMING DATES: Thursday, August 22 – K-5 Parent Curriculum Night, 6-7 pm (This event is for parents only.) Have a great week! Well, we did it! The first grade class and teachers have successfully made it through the first week of school and are now entering week two. We are loving our students’ smiles!
This blog is going to be another one full of a lot of important information. BACKPACKS, LUNCHBOXES, & WATERBOTTLES: Please make sure all of these items are labeled with your scholar’s name or initials. Several students have the same or similar items, and they get confused about which is theirs. Also, it is a good idea to label their ATE sweaters and jackets. SHOE TYING: We have noticed that several of our students’ shoes have been or have come untied, and this has caused accidents to take place in the hallway and on the playground. Please make sure that their shoes are tied and double-knotted before coming to school. HOMEWORK FOLDERS, AGENDAS, AND MATH WORKBOOKS: Red homework folders will be sent home every night, Monday – Thursday. Agendas will be sent home every day, including Fridays. Math workbooks will be sent home each day a page is assigned. Blue folders will be sent home on Mondays with completed work and/or tests; take a look at each paper and do NOT return it unless you have a question. Please make sure everything is placed in your scholar’s backpack and returned the next day. DRESS CODE / UNIFORM POLICY: The GreatHearts Academy network has a strict uniform policy. We understand that sometimes a belt is forgotten or a child puts on a pair of bright red socks that goes unnoticed until they arrive in the classroom. If we notice things like that we will send a dress code reminder on the homework logs or by email. Dress code reminder: Shoes must be solid black or solid white. If there are white soles on black shoes or pink stripes on white shoes, please use shoe polish to cover it up. MATH: Review – At the beginning of the year, first grade does a lot of math review. This week we are reviewing numbers through ten. This review is very important and builds a strong foundation as each concept builds on top of the other. Math Homework – Math homework (WB – workbook) is listed on the homework log (this week we stapled a paper into their red folders). Please do ONLY the workbook page that is listed in the log. If you notice any struggles or successes, feel free to write a note on the assigned homework page, the homework log, or send us an email. Xtramath – Xtramath is also part of the homework and needs to be completed at least three times each week. Last week the sign-up/log-in directions were sent home in the red homework folders. Please make sure your scholar is signed up by the end of the week. ACADEMICS: Math – Review numbers and number words through ten. This is a short chapter. We will review concepts taught during the week on Thursday. The math test will be on Friday. Spalding – Introducing/reviewing phonograms, handwriting using the Spalding grip. (We test 10 phonograms on Thursdays.) Geography – Oceans, continents, the 4 cardinal directions, northern and southern hemispheres, our country, city, state, and city (that our school is in – Goodyear) Grammar – common nouns Literature – Aesop’s Fables PETER PIPER PIZZA: Please join us at Peter Piper Pizza tomorrow (Tuesday) night. A portion of your purchase goes to the PSO and is one of the larger fund raisers of the year. As a bonus, the class with the most students who participate will win a pizza party! We enjoyed meeting everyone at Meet the Teacher night. Thank you SO much for all of the supplies that many of you have donated to our classroom! What a blessing!! We will be co-teaching this year. Mrs. Schulder will be teaching in the morning - Singapore Math and Spalding. Mrs. Richards will teach Science/History and the English Language Arts (literature, writing, and grammar) in the afternoon. We will both be teaching reading and assisting each other. BLOG: We will be updating this blog almost every Monday. Some weeks the blog will contain a lot of information, and some weeks it will be shorter. Please read the blog on a weekly basis for general classroom information. The blogs will be longer during the first weeks of school as there is a lot of information to pass on to you. COMMUNICATION: The best way to contact us is through email. Our email addresses are: [email protected] AND [email protected]. It will take us awhile to connect parent's emails with their scholars; so, please let us know whose parent you are. For example, "This is Mrs. Smith, Bob's mom." Thank you so much in advance for doing that. INFORMATION: During the first few weeks of school, please check your scholar's red homework folders for printed letters and/or packets. Please make sure to read this information, and feel free to email us if you have any questions. Your scholars will be learning a lot of new procedures within the next few days. For example, during lunch in the MPR, we eat lunch in silence because it is important that they finish their food and be able to get out to recess on time. SNACKS AND WATER BOTTLES: Scholars are allowed to have a small, healthy snack at our first (morning) recess. Please make sure that your child has a water bottle each day.
